James E. Gaede, MD

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, James Gaede, MD, MA, lived in 19 difference cities throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia while growing up.

"An early life experience with many cultures, languages, and ways of life has given me a broader insight into the nature of human sensibilities, their approach to wellness, health and well-being, and what it is that actually allows an individual to achieve a maximal state of living well and with gusto."

Dr. Gaede completed his undergraduate and graduate school work at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, received his Medical Degree at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, and served his internship and residency program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine, Board Eligible for Advanced Qualifications in Sleep Medicine, and has been certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine as an HIV Specialist.

Dr. Gaede has been an active medical educator his entire career, having served as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. South Dakota State University, the University of North Dakota, and the Mayo Graduate School of Education. He was recognized as Faculty Member of the Year with the Edward J. Batt Memorial Award. Active in clinical research, Dr. Gaede received the Sandoz Award for outstanding clinic research for his contributions to the D.A.T.A. and DYNAMICS studies on high blood pressure. He is also the recipient of the Balcom Award of Medical Excellence for his work in the development of high quality systems of clinical practice. Dr. Gaede maintains a current interest in the research areas of high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood vessel lining function, and HIV treatment protocols, and has spoken throughout the United States on these subjects.

Dr. Gaede has been consistently named as a Top Family Physician by the Consumer Research Council of Washington D.C., as well as one of the Top 100 Family Physicians in the United States. He was also recognized by his colleagues as a Top Doctor in Palm Springs Life Magazine.

In his time away from work, Dr. Gaede is the parent of six children and a caretaker of a menagerie of furry and feathered creatures and an old Saab. He enjoys music, reading, and the history of art and science.
