Brian K. Herman, MD

Board certified neurointerventional radiologist, Dr. Herman received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed a two-year accredited neuroradiology fellowship with training in interventional and neurointerventional radiology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

When Dr. Herman was a third year resident at the University of California, Irvine, one of his patients had a stroke on the table as she was being checked following a procedure for an aneurysm. Dr. Herman had been reading about a new procedure that let a physician apply the “clot-busting” drug TPA directly to the site in the brain with a catheter threaded through the groin. This innovative procedure was vastly superior to the accepted method of introducing TPA through an IV in the arm because the blood flow to the brain was restored sooner and less damage was done.

As Dr. Herman argued for the new procedure, the other physicians demurred, leaving him alone with the patient. He proceeded and she left the hospital the next day – fully recovered. He had identified his passion in medicine – interventional neuroradiology, which puts him in an elite group of only a few hundred physicians in the country, and the only one in the Coachella Valley.

When I finished my fellowship, I wanted to go somewhere that would let me start an endovascular neurosurgical program, not an inexpensive proposition for a hospital. Eisenhower Medical Center eagerly embraced the idea as part of their commitment to providing the best in health care, and funded the initial investment. Since I've been here, I've seen that repeated many times over, in many different areas of health care. It's very gratifying to work in that kind of cutting-edge, life-saving environment.
