Jian Chen, MD, is Board Certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology and sees patients at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center in Rancho Mirage. While he treats patients with all types of cancer, Dr. Chen has a special interest in hematological malignancies and thoracic oncology.
After completing medical school in Shanghai, China, he completed a residency program at Shanghai Children’s Hospital. After relocating to the United States, Dr. Chen participated in research at Dartmouth Medical School and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a residency program with the Department of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Shadyside Hospital in Pennsylvania. He then completed a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Chen has published a dozen cancer research papers and studied targeted therapy for cancer during his research at University of Pittsburgh and UCSD.
Dr. Chen was interested in becoming a physician at an early age, observing that doctors are the “body’s engineers” that help others lead the best life possible. “I wanted to make a difference and bring comfort to people,” states Dr. Chen. “Pursuing a career in medicine was seen as a noble ambition in China.”
While in medical school, Dr. Chen’s cousin and friend was stricken with acute leukemia, which sparked his interest in oncology. “The more I studied and learned about oncology, the more interested I became in this subspecialty,” recalls Dr. Chen. “I was excited and continue to be excited about the continual advances in cancer care.”
Dr. Chen sees the relationship between body and mind as an integral part of healing and treatment for cancer. “The balance between body and mind and spirit is key to healing,” states Dr. Chen.
