    Donald Gardenier is a nurse practitioner in gastroenterology in Rancho Mirage on the main hospital campus in the Hirschberg MD Building, Suite 101. He completed his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Nursing at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from New York University, and earned his Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He completed a clinical fellowship in liver diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

    Dr. Gardenier was Assistant Professor and Clinical Program Director at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City from 1999 – 2016. There, he developed and led a primary care-based multidisciplinary program to treat patients with chronic hepatitis C. His model was adopted by the New York State Department of Health and duplicated statewide. He was recognized as an Edge Runner by the American Academy of Nursing for his work.

    Dr. Gardenier has worked for many years to promote patient care, particularly among underserved and marginalized patient groups. He has conducted clinical research and lectured extensively on liver disease and other topics, has authored multiple publications, and served on numerous local, state, and national commissions and committees. He has also served on the board of directors of the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Since 2011, he has edited the opinion column "Point/Counterpoint" in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners. 

    Dr. Gardenier is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nursing, a National Health Service Corps Scholar and a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing. A first generation American, he is fluent in Dutch and Spanish, and is a returned Peace Corps volunteer.
