He completed a residency program in Internal Medicine at Case Western Reserve MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Continuing at Case Western Reserve University, he completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease. He then completed two additional fellowship programs: Interventional Cardiology at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan and Structural Cardiology at Buffalo General Medical Center, University of Buffalo, New York.
Both Dr. Sharma’s parents are nurses, which influenced his decision to pursue medicine as a vocation. “I volunteered at a hospital and I really enjoyed the environment,” states Dr. Sharma. “My older sister led the way to medical school and her counsel solidified my path into medicine.”
With regard to patient care, Dr. Sharma seeks to establish trusting relationship with people. “I meet people at their most vulnerable state – something is wrong with their heart, so it is imperative that they trust me as we share in decision making with regard to their treatment path. I try to envision each patient as a family member and discuss issues with them as if they were an aunt or uncle. It makes it easier for me to speak frankly and honestly with them.”
