He is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and received his general surgery training and surgical oncology fellowship at RUSH University Medical Center and Cook County Health, both in Chicago. Additional graduate education includes a PhD in immunology/microbiology from RUSH University and an MBA from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. After his training, Dr. Staren remained as a faculty member at RUSH and held positions as Professor of General Surgery and Associate Dean for Medical Student Programs. He subsequently served as Professor and Chairman of Surgery at the Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo Medical Center) and Medical Director of the Medical College of Ohio Cancer Institute (now Elanor N. Dana Cancer Center); then as Chief Medical Officer and CEO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (now City of Hope) Medicine and Science, and CEO of its Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, Arizona.
Dr. Staren is a member of numerous academic organizations including the American Surgical Association and is a past president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the RUSH Surgical Society and the Toledo Surgical Society. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and has been regularly listed in “Best Doctor’s in America” and “America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.” He has published nearly 300 scientific works including more than 150 manuscripts, 80 plus abstracts, 46 book chapters, and 12 books.
