Safety Tips
The best way to avoid sexual assault is to incorporate safety measures into your daily life. Because you have the potential of becoming a sexual assault victim, the following are a few precautionary measures you can implement to lessen your risk:
- Use a deadbolt and peephole in your residence door.
- Keep doors and windows locked.
- Leave lights on when you leave or if you are alone.
- Have your keys ready when you go to unlock your car.
- Plan your route in advance and know where "safe" places are located (police stations, hospitals, etc.).
- If you are being followed, drive to a police station or well-lighted public place, and call 911 or honk the horn to get attention. Don't drive home, and don't get out of your vehicle until you feel it is safe.
- If you are going on a first date, arrange to meet in a public place.
- Be careful with alcohol as it can impair your judgment and reactions.
- Don't leave your beverages open and unattended. Date rape drugs are tasteless, colorless and odorless.
