2024 Project

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) involving the circulatory (blood) system is the highest cause of death among Hispanics, as is the rest of the population in the United States.

Early detection is paramount when fighting this disease.

Stress testing, specifically myocardial perfusion imaging, has become the mainstay of early detection for CVD. This scan is a type of nuclear imaging test, using a special camera that not only produces 3-D images of the heart, but also shows how blood flows to the heart. This crucial information allows physicians to analyze the function of the heart, assists in diagnosing, shows if there is reversibility or blockage that needs to be fixed and/or if a heart attack has occurred.

This state-of-the-art equipment has several advantages over conventional scanners. Including a dramatic reduction in injected dose of radioactive isotope and imaging time is reduced to 2 minutes from 20-30 minutes. The unique design eliminates patient claustrophobia and provides exceptional images.

Latinos in Philanthropy has the opportunity to raise $500,000 to help fund the new digital single-photon emission computerized tomography (D-SPECT) Scanner for the future Cardiovascular Institute, marking Latinos in Philanthropy’s footprint in the current Eisenhower Passion for Excellence Campaign.
