March is Blood Clot Awareness Month

With 900,000 Americans affected yearly, early action saves lives. Know the signs and symptoms of blood clots:

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) usually occurs in the legs or arms and is evidenced with:

one-sided leg or arm swelling, pain or redness, warmth or red/discolored skin

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) occurs in the lungs with:

sudden shortness of breath, chest pain with breathing, rapid heart rate, unexplained cough
 

High Risk Factors for blood clots include:

  • Surgery
  • Injury
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control
  • Long periods of immobility
