Men's Health Month - Focus on Prostate Health

June is Men’s Health Month which provides an excellent opportunity for men to think about the screenings they may need for prevention and wellness. Prostate cancer screening, called a PSA test, is an important one — a simple blood test and digital rectal exam to palpate the prostate. Depending on family history and other factors, many men benefit from prostate cancer screening beginning at age 55. If prostate cancer is detected, there are a number of options for next steps depending on the risk category, the patient’s age and other factors. Men experiencing BPH, a common age-related condition in which a man’s prostate gland becomes enlarged, also have more options than ever before, with minimally invasive approaches that have fewer of the side effects that concern many men, including incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
