Confronting Cancer at Stage 1
Leading-edge procedure removes lung cancer in two-part surgeryWHEN SHERRY GONNELLO MET with her new cardiologist at Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center, she expected to get the results of her heart checkup, having been diagnosed a decade before with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat).
She did not expect to hear Ehete M. Bahiru, MD, tell her, "I saw something on your lung, a small nodule. It doesn't look right to me."
Dr. Bahiru promptly sent Gonnello to internist Natasha Creighton, MD, who, also concerned, referred Gonnello to interventional pulmonologist Sevwandi De Silva, MD. Armed with scans of Gonnello's left lung, Dr. De Silva told her the small firm lump looked "suspicious" and needed to be biopsied.
"My first reaction was a few tears," Gonnello says, "because I had just turned 75 and my dad, who died at 75 of a major heart problem, also had lung cancer."
Eisenhower Medical Research Associate Program
Firsthand Experience Prepares Students for Medical SchoolFOR ANYONE WHO has navigated the ever-increasing competitive landscape of university applications, the desire to stand out from the crowd is as important as stellar academics and testing scores. For medical school, recent college graduates could argue it's even more difficult.
In its sophomore year at Eisenhower Health, the Eisenhower Medical Research Associate Program (EMRAP) is bridging that gap, creating an opportunity for local undergraduate students to experience the medical field firsthand inside the hospital at the main campus in Rancho Mirage. Through EMRAP, students will not only gain invaluable clinical and research experience, but also access mentorship from directors of the program to staff physicians, residents and now, second-year EMRAP cohort veterans.
The OTHER Sugar
Exercise caution when choosing artificial sweetenersAS PEOPLE CONSIDER the potential impact of obesity, diabetes and prediabetes on their health, many are searching for alternatives to staples that have long been part of their diet, particularly alternatives to sugar.
"We know that some artificial sweeteners are beneficial for people with diabetes and people needing to watch total carbohydrate intake," explains Tama Rodriguez, RDN, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), Eisenhower Diabetes Education Services.
"In most cases, it would be better to drink a diet soda than drink a regular soda if you have diabetes," says Rodriguez. "And, for people who are trying to lose or manage their weight, there are no calories in a diet soda, providing an additional benefit in reducing total calorie intake to promote weight loss."
