2FA typically includes a password as the first factor, and a second factor that’s different, like a security token or biometric factor. The second factor could be a code sent to a smartphone via text message, or a fingerprint, face or retina scan.
2FA protects against a number of threats, including phishing, social engineering, password brute-force attacks, and weak or stolen credentials, and is considered an information systems security best practice in the health care industry.
What is changing?
MyChart currently offers 2FA as an option for Eisenhower patients. Beginning February 19, 2025, Eisenhower patients using MyChart will be required to manually opt out of 2FA rather than opting in. In May 2025, 2FA will be required by all MyChart users.
