Mehrdad Abbasi, MD

Mehrdad Abbasi, MD, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is seeing patients with Eisenhower Primary Care Concierge program in Rancho Mirage. He has been an active member of the medical staff at Eisenhower Health since 2005, serving as an inpatient hospitalist, mentor and educator to resident physicians.  

Dr. Abbasi served as Medical Director of the Hospitalist Program from 2008 to 2019.  During this time, he was involved in developing several quality initiatives and patient safety programs at Eisenhower Health. Under Dr. Abbasi’s leadership, the Hospitalist Program developed and grew from a group of five hospitalist physicians to a team of 26 who all currently play a central educational role for the Eisenhower School of Graduate Medical Education. In 2013, Dr. Abbasi became an associate director for the Eisenhower Health Internal Medicine Residency Program where he was involved in the design and implementation of the program, furthering his passion for education. “I found rounding with residents and teaching at the bedside very rewarding,” states Dr. Abbasi.  In 2019, he became Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, teaching residents in the hospital as well as at the residency clinic.

Referencing his transition from inpatient hospital medicine to primary care, Dr. Abbasi says “I’ve had the privilege of caring for many patients over the course of 17 years in a hospital setting and I’ve realized what was missing in my career was establishing long-term patient relationships, which is one of the most gratifying things in medicine. That was one of the reasons I went into internal medicine initially – I wanted to treat a vast range of diseases in the hospital and office. Internal medicine is one of the very few fields in medicine that has such a range in terms of pathology and clinical settings.”

Regarding his approach to patient care, Dr. Abbasi further expresses, “In my new role as a primary care physician I hope to have interactions with patients that are lasting and to develop individualized treatment plans with shared decision-making to ensure their wellbeing over time is in line with their personal life goals.”
