Description

Summary

This is a retrospective study in which the performance of screening Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) will be evaluated for breast cancer detection in approximately 1000 consecutive screening mammograms in patients aged 75 years and older performed at UCSD and Eisenhower from June 2015 to June 2019. Cancer detection rate, abnormal interpretation rate, positive predictive values, sensitivity, and specificity will be calculated. The goal of this retrospective study is to determine the performance metrics of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) among women aged 75 years and older. Aims and objectives: 1) To assess the recall rate, cancer detection rate and false positive rate of screening DBT among women aged 75 years and older 2) Determine the role of breast density, prior history of cancer, and hormonal replacement therapy 3) Stratify patients based on the risk for breast cancer; will older patients with increased risk benefit more from screening DBT than those with average risk? 4) Determine breast cancer specific mortality in this group of patients

Azadeh Elmi, MD, is a Board Certified Radiologist specializing in Breast Imaging, seeing patients at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center Schnitzer-Novack Breast Center in Rancho Mirage.

After medical school, Dr. Elmi completed an internship at Griffin Hospital/Yale School of Medicine and then continued her medical education by completing a residency program in radiology at University of Pennsylvania.  She subsequently finished a fellowship program in Breast Imaging at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Dr. Elmi first became interested in medicine at an early age by observing her mother, who is an internist. “I was able to see the great satisfaction my mother received at her work caring for her patients,” states Dr. Elmi.

While in medical school, Dr. Elmi became interested in radiology as it integrates technology with medicine to provide high level patient care. “During my residency in radiology, I became interested in Breast Imaging as a specialty,” explains Dr. Elmi. “Breast radiology touches all aspects of radiology – mammogram, CT, MRI and biopsy, as well as providing personal satisfaction in being able to diagnose a cancer early and setting the stage to provide the best patient care and treatment possible.”
