Colonoscopy and Prep Instructions
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a procedure where a gastroenterologist inserts a thin flexible tube (colonoscope) into your colon all the way to the cecum (where your colon begins). The colonoscope is equipped with a digital camera and light that allows the operator to see any abnormalities. During the procedure, during which time patients are mostly/fully asleep from administered sedatives, the doctor will carefully examine the colon and rectum by looking for any growths or abnormalities. If a polyp is identified, the doctor can biopsy or remove it during the procedure.
Colonoscopy Prep
To perform a colonoscopy, the entire colon must be cleaned out. This process is called colonoscopy prep, or simply “prep,” and involves taking a laxative and following dietary restrictions. There are multiple different preparation options so please ask your provider which is best for you.
