First OB ED in Riverside County
Eisenhower Health Becomes First Licensed Obstetrical Emergency Department (OBED) in Riverside CountyEisenhower Health is proud to announce its newly licensed Obstetrical Emergency Department (OBED). Located in the hospital’s Family Birth Center, the OBED enhances the Center’s comprehensive maternity services available to expectant mothers in the Coachella Valley.
The Eisenhower Family Birth Center’s OBED is a specialized area within the Family Birth Center, equipped for obstetrical emergent visits, staffed 24/7 by a team of board certified hospitalists specialized in obstetrics, and certified labor and delivery nurses experienced in treating high-risk pregnancies (after 20 weeks).
“In an OBED, you have an emergency unit designed specifically for the needs of the pregnant patient with a dedicated staff,” says Paul Mikel, MD, FACOG, Medical Director, Department of Obstetrics, Eisenhower Health. “A trained specialist sees each and every patient and the care team works together on a plan, offering both improved safety and convenience for the patient.”
One Patient's Cautionary Tale: "Get your tests done."
“In 2016, we found out that I had prostate cancer,” says Indio resident Bruce Daniels, 75. As part of the preoperative workup before having robotic surgery to treat it, he underwent a whole-body scan to ensure that the prostate cancer hadn’t metastasized (spread). While there was no sign of metastasis, the scan did reveal what appeared to be a cyst on Daniels’ pancreas.“My urologist said he couldn’t operate until I had the cyst checked out,” Daniels relates. So he went to see Geoffrey Block, MD, Eisenhower Health’s interventional gastroenterologist at the time, who performed a biopsy that determined the cyst was not cancerous. Daniels was cleared to undergo prostate cancer treatment, which was successful.
No Time to Be Down
Outstanding spinal surgery maintains patient’s active lifeBy her own description, Samantha Pyle Buono is “not an athlete who’s running marathons, training for an Ironman or playing tennis or golf.” But she maintains a demanding schedule as a working mother of two teenage boys that could tire out any competitor.
“I’m the kind of mom who never misses a water polo game, makes all the snacks, rides the team bus to away games, sits in the bleachers and stands in line for two days at Disneyland,” she says. “Our family loves doing things together. I don’t have time to be down.”
When severe back pain kept her from doing the things she loves with the people she loves, the Palm Desert resident sought expert surgical help — three times — at Eisenhower Neuroscience Institute.
Game On! The Fast-Growing Sport of Pickleball
Preventing injuries is key to staying healthy on and off the courtWhile astronaut Ed White was achieving a stellar milestone in the summer of 1965 as the first American to walk in space, back on earth, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum were in the process of inventing pickleball in a quest to entertain their bored children.
More than 50 years later, pickleball has become a national obsession. According to The Sports & Fitness Industry Association, in 2021, there were 4.8 million players in the country. As of 2022, USA Pickleball™ listed 10,000 facilities nationwide; the Coachella Valley is home to more than 30 with plans to build additional facilities. In 2018, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden jumped on the pickleball bandwagon hosting the annual Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships, one of the sport’s top competitive events (note: The 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic). For the month of October 2022 and through the championships, the Indian Wells facility temporarily converted 40 tennis courts into pickleball courts for open play.
