End of Life Care

On June 9, 2016, the End of Life Option Act became effective in California. The Act authorizes an adult who meets certain qualifications, and who has been determined by the person’s attending physician to be suffering from a terminal disease (which is defined specifically in the law), to make a request for a drug prescribed for the purpose of ending the person’s life.

Eisenhower Health is exercising its option not to participate in activities that are authorized under the California End of Life Option Act. Eisenhower is committed to providing compassionate, effective and palliative care for dying patients in a manner that is consistent with Eisenhower’s Mission and Supporting Commitments.

People wanting to participate in the Act should speak with a primary care physician to discuss personal health matters and to understand the requirements of the law as they pertain to the patient and to the physician.
