Treatment
Depending on the type of cancer you are diagnosed with and the stage of the cancer, your treatment may include a combination of the following options:
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs or chemicals to directly attack cancerous cells. The goal is to destroy the cells or prevent further growth. At times, more than one chemotherapy drug may be administered, since they do not all act in the same way. Chemotherapy drugs are commonly administered intravenously, although some may be injected into the muscle or under the skin. Some chemotherapy can be taken orally in pill, tablet, or liquid form. Chemotherapy is traditionally an outpatient procedure, and is given in cycles over weeks or months.
Radiation Oncology
Radiation Oncology is one of the most technologically integrated specialties in the medical field. Your multidisciplinary team of radiation oncology physicians, radiation therapists, medical physicist and dosimetrist, use complex software and equipment to plan the best treatment for each patient. Our main goal is to provide patients with the best care possible using the latest technologies in a safe and proven manner. Interventional Pulmonology
Interventional Pulmonology (IP) is an approach to treating and managing lung cancer and other conditions of the respiratory system. While still a relatively new field, Interventional Pulmonology is dedicated to less-invasive methods of diagnosing, treating and managing lung cancer and its symptoms. Lung Cancer Tumor Board
Because of Eisenhower Health's affiliation with UC San Diego Health, we are able to provide a combined lung cancer tumor board with lung cancer experts from Eisenhower Health and UC San Diego Health.
Tumor boards generally include medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, precision medicine scientists, pharmacists and other integrated care providers such as social workers, nutritionists and genetic counselors – all gathered to convene on the best path forward for Eisenhower Health patients.
Cases presented at a tumor board meetings may be reviewed for many reasons, including:
- Treatment recommendations
- Management challenges
- Discussion of treatment guidelines
- Cases occurring in unusual sites or with unusual presentations
- Other disease(s) affecting patient management
- Clinical trial opportunities
